The Jr. Checkers Bantam AA team traveled to Adrian, Michigan over the Labor Day weekend for a 6 game weekend hosted at the new Adrian College facility. The Adrian College staff treated the team like pros. They were assigned a team locker room for the entire weekend, enabling them to leave their gear airing out all weekend which was a huge convenience. The Jr. Checkers left Charlotte via a chartered bus on Thursday after FACE OFF Night to play 5 AA teams from the greater Detroit and northern Ohio areas. Over the 3 days they would play a total of 6 games: 2 games on Friday, 2 on Saturday and our last 2 on Sunday. The Bantam AA team proudly unveiled the 2008-09 Jr. Checkers jerseys which were on loan for the weekend. They represented Charlotte Youth Hockey with pride. The players knew the weekend would be challenging but were pumped to play hard for 6 games. Each game consisted of 2-15 minute periods followed by an ice cut and a final 18 minute period. All five teams from the Midwest came out fast and physical and our boys equaled their talent but lost by a narrow 1 point margin in the first games. Our second game was against a team from Sylvania who won the Silver Sticks tournament the prior year. It was extremely physical but well under control and in the end we were all very proud of the outcome with a 4-2 loss. Our third game against Orchard Lake/St. Mary’s was very close and we fell to the Pirates 2-1 in the last few minutes of the third period. Our fourth game on Saturday was a blowout as the Checkers had 3 players with hat tricks and a final score of 15-2 which was indicative of our talent, not the lack of from the other team. Sunday we met Belle Tire for a 2 game bout. The Checkers won both games by narrow margins. We drove through the night to return to Charlotte on Monday morning. All and all it was a great weekend of hockey with commendable outcomes as these were the first games these kids had played together as a team. Coaches and players will be talking about this trip for the entire season. Coach Tom Aukskalnis commented, "The boys played extremely physical all weekend which helped slow down the bigger and faster opponents". "With playing this many games in a weekend it was very important that we kept the kids hydrated and many thanks to the parents for donating water and sports drinks to the team". To end the weekend it was enjoyable to hear the opposing coach yelling at his kids "you could not beat a bunch of kids from the south?" GO CHECKERS!

Coaches, Players, Parents and Siblings are all welcome! Come hungry and bring your skates. (Player and 1 parent are mandatory). Two of our teams travel next weekend for their first games...let's get them pumped up and give them a great send off!!

We are excited to have such enthusiastic and eager people step up and commit their time and talents to OUR organization.
